Newcastle United’s pre-season is now winding to a close with the new Premier League campaing fast-approaching.

In just over a week, the Magpies will begin the new season when they take on newly promoted Nottingham Forest at St James’ Park.

But before then, there will be a feast of pre-season football for the Toon Army to enjoy, with Newcastle playing two games in the space of 24 hours.

Eddie Howe’s men face Atalanta on Friday before welcoming La Liga club Athletic Club to Tyneside.

Here we round up all you need to know about the first of those fixtures.

When is Newcastle United vs Atalanta?

Newcastle United vs Atalanta will take place on Friday, July 29 at St James’ Park.

The clash will kick off at 7.45pm.

This game will be streamed on the club’s official web channel NUFC TV.

DAZN subscribers will also be able to tune into this one through the DAZN app.

Are tickets still available?

Tickets for this one ar flying off the shelves, with more than 84,000 tickets sold across the Atalanta and Athletic Club clashes.

Tickets are still available, though, with online sale still open, as well as in-person. Sales will be in-person only on the day of the game.

The Magpies have been crticised for their pricing of this friendly, with ticket prices starting at £20 for adults and £10 per child.

The club say ticket prices will increase on the day of the game.

What has Howe said?

Howe spoke about Newcastle’s pre-season preparations after the 3-2 defeat to Benfica.

“I think when you look at their results over pre-season Benfica have had a very strong start,” he said.

“Some of the fixtures they have played you can see they are very good in possession of the ball. But I thought it was an even game. I thought both teams played well and both teams had strong spells in the match so it was a really good test for us.”

Speaking about the Atalanta clash, he added: “It was just what we needed going into another weekend against strong opposition. We feel that when the Premier League kicks off we will be ready, that’s what pre-season is for.”

Recent results

As mentioned above, Newcastle lost to Benfica in their last outing, following on from a defeat to Bundesliga outfit Mainz.

Before that, the Magpies defeated 1860 Munich and Gateshead.

Atalanta have beaten Como 4-0 and Gambarogno-Contone 12-1. The Bergamo side saw a friendly with Lecco cancelled between those two outings.

Team news

Howe will split his squad for these two games, but he will be without Joelinton, who misses out through suspension, despite the fact it is pre-season.

Jonjo Shelvey is also expected to miss out after picking up an injury against Benfica last time out.

Nick Pope is expected to start in goal as Martin Dubravka continues to struggle with injury.

Atalanta lost star full-back Robin Gosens to Inter Milan this summer, but they have signed Merih Demiral from Juventus on a permanent deal after a successful loan spell.

Demiral is expected to play here.
