‘It’s time’ - Matheus Cunha bombshell as Newcastle United target drops huge transfer hint
Wolverhampton Wanderers hothead Matheus Cunha shared he “needs to be happy” before swiftly deleted his social media post.
Newcastle United are reportedly interested in activating the Brazilian’s £62.5million release clause this summer. The Daily Mail claimed earlier this week that Toon chiefs are keeping tabs on Cunha, signed by sporting director Paul Mitchell during his time at RB Leipzig.
Cunha is clearly talented, with 13 caps for Brazil since making his debut in 2021. The 25-year-old - who can play a multitude of positions - has also bagged 31 goals in 85 games for Wolves following his permanent switch 18 months ago.
The Midlands club initially signed him on loan from Atletico Madrid and he became their prized asset once Pedro Neto joined Chelsea last summer. However, discipline issues have plagued his fledgling career, with a red card and FA fine for lashing out at Bournemouth defender Milos Kerkez a recent example.

Cunha also hit out at a reporter after he seemingly failed to applaud the Wolves away end in January. This temperament is why many Newcastle supporters raised eyebrows when the links emerged in midweek.
His release clause would make him United’s second-most-expensive player ever - narrowly behind current talisman Alexander Isak. Any deal likely hinges on the Magpies qualifying for the Champions League, with several Premier League big-hitters understood to be interested.
Now on the eve of Wolves’ clash with Tottenham Hotspur, Cunha has risked the wrath of his teammates, manager and fans by dropping a mammoth transfer hint. A post - which was swiftly deleted - read: “(It’s) time to be happy. I will follow my dreams, not yours… so stay cool.”
Wolves boss Vitor Pereira revealed on Friday that Cunha will stay the Spurs game on the bench having just served his four-match suspension for the Kerkez incident. In Cunha’s absence, they managed to win three consecutive Premier League games.
Alan Shearer does not expect Matheus Cunha to play much more for Wolves
Toon icon Shearer has questioned whether Cunha will play much in the final seven games of the season. The player only penned a new deal in February, although that included the £62.million release clause to protect their investment.
“My guess is that he signed a contract, perhaps, to get Wolves some money in the summer, which would have a clause in there,” Shearer told The Rest Is Football podcast. “So he’ll leave in the summer and someone will buy him. So I don’t suspect he’ll play a big part in what Wolves do in the future.”
