Newcastle United have several players who could switch their international allegiance

Former Newcastle United manager John Carver has insisted Scotland will not plunder England for any Newcastle United players before Euro 2024.

Reports in recent months had suggested the likes of Harvey Barnes, Tino Livramento, Elliott Anderson and Anthony Gordon could switch their international allegiance. Leeds United prodigy Archie Gray has also been touted as a potential Scotland international.

Gordon already looks like a non-starter as England have called him up for their upcoming international double-header against Brazil and Belgium. FIFA rules state nationalities cannot be changed if a player makes more than three appearances for a respective country or competes at a major tournament.

Anderson, out of the three remaining Newcastle players, appears the most likely to switch. The Whitley Bay native has represented Scotland at under-16, under-17, under-18 and under-21 level.

Livramento is a current England under-21 international and has represented the Three Lions since a schoolboy. Barnes, who earned a solitary England cap in 2020, remains eligible for the Tartan Army.

However, ex-Toon boss and Scotland assistant coach Carver has dismissed suggestions Steve Clarke could raid English soil for fresh talent. He told the press before their game against the Netherlands: “I would be very surprised (if anyone came into the group) because loyalty is massive. We are almost settled on what we are going to take away.

“I would be very surprised if somebody comes out from nowhere. We are more or less settled. Unless we find somebody who is like ‘wow’, an outstanding player.

“I am not going to go down this street of Anderson and Gordon and all this lot because I have had enough of that, I am sick of talking about that. If somebody comes from nowhere, I would be very surprised. But we are looking at all the options for now and, obviously, for the future because we have to take it further again after the Euros.

“We have had a few people looking at that situation along with many others. I think it is important you never stop looking and searching. That’s how it should be. If people think they are comfortable getting a place in the squad then they become relaxed.”
