Kalvin Phillips update as £6m negotiations underway - Newcastle United, West Ham & Crystal Palace keen

Newcastle United remain interested in signing Kalvin Phillips but Manchester City's demands are currently too high.

Crystal Palace manager Roy Hodgson has confirmed his interest in signing Manchester City midfielder Kalvin Phillips on loan until the end of the season.

Newcastle United boss Eddie Howe is a keen admirer of the England international - deemed surplus to requirements at the Etihad Stadium - but financial constraints have meant the Magpies have been unable to move for anyone so far this January window.

Man City are believed to have quoted a £6million loan fee, a figure - according the The Guardian's Ed Aarons - Palace, Newcastle and West Ham United are unwilling to pay. It's claimed Phillips' representatives are negotiating with City in an attempt to lower their demands.

If successful then Palace hope to be front of queue after Hodgson went public with his interest in the midfielder. Howe, meanwhile, has remained tight lipped.

“He’s a good player,” Hodgson told Sky Sports. “I would like to think that if Kalvin Phillips is available and a possibility for the club – once again, there will be financial restrictions, who knows whether the club feels they will be able to afford that – if you’re talking about the level of player, I don’t feel there will be many managers who would not say: ‘Yeah, we will be really happy to have him come to the club.

“As far as I’m concerned, it’s a name that’s out there. All we know, like most other clubs, is that there is a possibility that Man City will either sell him or loan him.

“If they are purely going to sell him, then I don’t think we will be in the market. If they’re going to loan him, I would like to think that we could possibly put our hand up and push ourselves forward.  What we could then of course offer is the chance to play regular football in the Premiership in the build-up to what will be a very important summer for England and for him.

“We might not be the only club in that position, so at the end of the day, a lot will have to happen before we find out where Kalvin Phillips is going to end up if he’s going to go anywhere.”

Newcastle are close to the edge of allowable losses over a three-year period in relation to the Premier League's Profit and Sustainability Rules. As a result, funds are tight. Howe recently admitted: "In an ideal world, given the freedom to act we would have brought players in already.

"But we're not in that situation - as Darren Eales alluded to on Thursday, Financial Fair Play is a problem for us, and we're having to navigate round that. That's the position we're in. When does it become a problem? It's already one, but we're trying to manage through it."
