Newcastle United star Kieran trippier has been speaking after his side’s defeat to Aston Villa on Saturday.

The Magpies were blown away at Villa Park following a disappointing and under-par display from Eddie Howe’s men. The result is a big setback in the race for Champions League football, though Tottenham also lost on Saturday, slipping up against strugglers Bournemouth in a big boost for the Magpies.

Interestingly, Newcastle and Tottenham face each other next up, and that one could go a long way towards deciding which team ends up landing a top four spot. In the meantime, the Magpies need to dust themselves down following an uncharacteristic performance in the Midlands, and defender Trippier admits the squad are keen to move on quickly from the result.

“I don't think we were right from minute one,” he told the club’s media channel.

“They played very well to be fair to them. But it was one of those days where it didn't go well for us. We have to dust ourselves down and forget about this result to move on to a massive game next week.” Trippier added: “In any game it is furstrating to concede. All three goals were avoidable. they were on the front foot and from minute one, it wasn't right. They played very well and deserved all three points.

“It's always difficult when you conceded again. But we have to forget about this result. They wanted it more, and that's strange with how we have performed all season, but we have to get back on top.”

Trippier put in an off-colour performance himself, arguably delivering one of the most concerning displays despite being one of the most reliable performers in this Newcastle squad. But the full-back isn’t hiding from the display, adding: “We usually play on the front foot, with intensity. We didn't do that off the ball, and myself included, at times.”
