Kieran Trippier to Newcastle United transfer latest as £12m claim made

Newcastle United are making significant progress as they look to make England defender Kieran Trippier their first signing of the January transfer window.

Spanish daily newspaper Diario AS have reported the Magpies are close to agreeing a fee of around £12 million with Spanish champions Atletico Madrid.

It is understood that figure could increase with a number of add-ons set to be included in the deal.

The former Burnley and Spurs wing-back has enjoyed a successful two and a half year stint as he helped Diego Simeone’s side beat bitter rivals Real Madrid to last season’s La Liga title.

The 35-times capped England star missed training on Tuesday afternoon after featuring in Atletico’s 2-0 home win against Rayo Vallecano on Sunday.

Should United complete the deal over the coming days, they would reunite Trippier with Magpies boss Eddie Howe after the duo worked together at Burnley almost a decade ago.

Howe initially took Trippier to Turf Moor on a loan deal ahead of the 2011/12 season before making the move permanent during the January transfer window.

Trippier went on to join Spurs in a £4.4 million deal in July 2015 and was handed a maiden England call-up just under two years later.

The wing-back famously netted his first Three Lions goal in the World Cup semi-final defeat against Croatia in 2018 and has been a regular feature in Gareth Southgate’s squads.

Trippier made a surprise move when he joined Atletico for a fee of around £19.8 million in the summer of 2019 but quickly made himself at home in the Spanish capital.

It has been suggested officials at the La Liga giants have tried to persuade Trippier to snub the advances from Newcastle - but the England star is keen on a move back to the Premier League and is close to becoming the first signing made by the Magpies under their new ownership.
