Miguel Almiron is set to be included in Newcastle United’s squad for the Premier League clash away to Southampton on Saturday (kick-off 3pm).

The Paraguayan is still expected to re-join MLS side Atlanta United in a deal worth £11million, though sources in the United States told NewcastleWorld earlier this week that a deal is progressing slowly.

So, with the formalities not yet completed, Almiron has remained on Tyneside and trained with his teammates ahead of the visit to the South Coast. He is likely to be on the bench at St Mary’s.

Providing an update on the 29-year-old’s situation, Howe told reporters at his pre-match press conference: “I think Miggy's head has been very, very solidly here. He's been brilliant in training this week. I've seen not one moment where I thought, I need to address this or speak to him or have a deeper conversation.

“I think we're both aware of the situation. Yes, there is interest in him from other clubs. There is potentially a chance he could leave before the window, but until that moment, and if that moment never arrives, he's still a valuable member of the squad. We love him to bits.

“He's got a great energy and character that's never changed for a second. He's been the ultimate professional. And let's see what happens.”

With Harvey Barnes and Callum Wilson ruled out until February, Howe is currently light of attacking options so having Almiron around is welcomed. But those injuries aren’t expected to block Almiron’s exit.

Howe said last week: “It’s not ideal (if Almiron was to leave),” said Howe. “But I don’t think it’s ideal from anyone’s viewpoint. From our side, we don’t want to lose players, but we know that there’s a reality to PSR and the ongoing managing of that situation.

“Sometimes, as we’ve said many times over the last few weeks, we’re making decisions not based on football, but based on decisions we potentially have to make for the future.”

Almiron has made 222 appearances and scored 30 goals for Newcastle since joining in January 2019, though has started just two Premier League games since March. His last goal for the club came in a 3-0 win over Fulham in December 2023.
