Liam Kennedy’s Newcastle United XI at Burnley - with two major defensive calls
And here we are, the final day of the Premier League season.
And here we are, the final day of the Premier League season.
Everyone expected it to be a relegation six-pointer at Turf Moor - and it is, if only for one of the teams.
Newcastle United and Eddie Howe have unexpectedly streaked away from trouble in the second half of the season, having failed to win any of their first 14 games. A top half finish, albeit a long shot, isn’t even off the table this afternoon.
For the Clarets, the potential outcome of this one is so much greater with their top-flight status at risk.
Mike Jackson’s side, 17th in the table, must match Leeds United’s result at Brentford to confirm survival in front of their home fans.
“We’ll pick our strongest team, and try and win the game,” United’s head coach vowed. There’s no let up from our perspective. We’re determined to end the season on a high.
“Tactically, we’ll try and get it right. Burnley’s a totally different challenge.”
Here’s Liam Kennedy’s predicted Newcastle United starting XI to face Burnley:

1. GK: Martin Dubravka
The rumour mill already has him replaced this summer, but he’s not played like a goalkeeper under pressure lately. Some of his best United form has come in the last few months. Photo: Stu Forster

2. RB: Kieran Trippier
Play your best players, that’s the way I’ve always looked at it. And Trippier is United’s best, or close to. He plays. And that’s no slight on Emil Krafth, who has been outrageously good, of late. Photo: PAUL ELLIS

3. CB: Jamaal Lascelles
With Fabian Schar still recovering from his knock to the head against Arsenal, United have a more than capable stand-in, in the shape of club captain Lascelles, to cover. Photo: Ian MacNicol

4. CB: Dan Burn
Has been a class act since signing, showing his brilliant ability with ball at feet, as well as his sound nose for sniffing out danger. Loves a block, or two, too. What a signing! Photo: Stuart MacFarlane
