Aston Villa and Liverpool are the latest clubs to be linked with a move for Spanish international winger Nico Williams - just weeks after Newcastle United considered a move for the Athletic Bilbao star.

The 20-year-old has enjoyed an impressive campaign with the La Liga club after scoring six goals and providing six assists in 25 appearances in all competitions as the Basque side have produced a promising challenge for a place in Europe next season.

His form led to an unexpected call-up to the Spain squad for the World Cup Finals in Qatar and Williams appeared in all four of their games during the tournament prior to their round-of-16 loss at the hands of Morocco. Those appearances came two months after the winger had been handed a maiden cap by Luis Enrique, who praised his progress ahead of a Nations League defeat against Switzerland.

He said: “He’s playing more often with Athletic now. He’s progressing wonderfully. I like him enormously. We’ve had him in the junior squad and have been following him for a long time. I reckon the family will be delighted: imagine the party if they both go to the World Cup. And they reach the final, well, that would be the absolute business.”

Williams’ form at domestic and international level led Newcastle to consider a January move for his services before turning their attention back towards their successful pursuit of Everton winger Anthony Gordon. However, the winger could still find himself in the Premier League next season after Spanish outlet AS revealed Liverpool and Aston Villa have both shown an interest in a player that will head into the final 12 months of his current deal this summer.

Villa were said to be ready to activate the £45m release clause in that deal during the January transfer window but Williams reportedly rejected a £120,000-a-week offer to move to Villa Park.
