In there a more in-form player in the Premier League than Newcastle United star Miguel Almiron?

Perhaps we should not be surprised given the Paraguay international showed some signs of what was to follow after scoring six goals during the Magpies pre-season schedule. It is safe to say Almrion has not been the most consistent goalscorer since he made a £20m move from Atlanta United in January 2019 but that has all changed this season as his resurgance under Eddie Howe continues to gather pace.

With talk of ‘playing like Almiron’ dominating the pre-match preparations, the attacking midfielder gave the perfect rebuke to Jack Grealish’s ‘jibe’ with a goal in United’s 3-3 draw against Manchester City and that set the tone for what has been a fine run of form over the last month. A goal of the season contender against Fulham formed part of a brace to help Newcastle to a 4-1 win at Craven Cottage and Almiron followed that up with home goals in wins against Brentford and Everton.

But he was not done yet as the 28-year-old gave another example of his increased confidence as a brilliant run and finish that proved decisive in Sunday’s impressive 2-1 win at Tottenham Hotspur that left his side sat in the Champions League places for the first time this season.

Almiron’s form received praise from team-mate Callum Wilson after the win in North London, as he told Sky Sports: “We are so happy for him because he works so hard and he probably just needed to add goals and assists to his game this season he has done that.

“Long may it continue for him. He is on fire at the moment. If he didn’t score (against Tottenham), then I was probably going to kill him, to be honest with you.  I was square for a tap-in, but it’s a great finish. He’s got some Goal of the Month contenders in there by himself, so we are delighted to have him and he is full of confidence, which is helping the team.”

Almiron will hope to continue his stunning run of form when the Magpies host Aston Villa on Saturday afternoon.
