Manchester City are sweating on the fitness of influential goalkeeper Ederson ahead of Saturday’s FA Cup quarter-final tie with Newcastle United.

The Brazil international has been a big part of what has been the most successful period in City’s history in recent years after helping Pep Guardiola’s side to five Premier League titles, four Carabao Cups, two FA Cups and solitary wins in the Champions League, UEFA Super Cup and FIFA World Club Cup.

The former Benfica man has continued to impress this season after keeping 12 clean sheets in 36 appearances in all competitions as Guardiola’s side challenge for success in the Premier League, FA Cup and Champions League and bid to replicate what was a historic treble of trophies last season.

However, Ederson is believed to be a major doubt for Saturday’s meeting with Newcastle after suffering what looked like a serious injury in Sunday’s draw with Premier League title rivals Liverpool. The City keeper was replaced by Stefan Ortega after he collided with Reds striker Darwin Nunez and gave away a penalty that helped Jurgen Klopp’s men battle back to claim a point in a highly anticipated clash at Anfield.

However, the challenge that preceded Alexis Mac Allister’s successful spot-kick could have more serious consequences for City’s bid for success on a number of fronts after manage Guardiola appeared to give a negative response to a question over the injury suffered by his first-choice goalkeeper.

Guardiola, speaking to beIN Sport after the game, admitted that Ederson's injury is a concern as his side turn their focus towards their quarter-final date with the Magpies. When asked how Ederson was in the aftermath of the game, the City boss replied: "It doesn't look good.”

Newcastle have their own concerns ahead of Saturday’s tie as the likes of Callum Wilson, Joelinton, Nick Pope and Kieran Trippier all set to miss out. Lewis Hall will return to contention after missing Monday’s meeting with parent club Chelsea due to the Premier League’s regulations on loan players.
