The Magpies are still keen to add to their squad and they could be handed a boost by a Premier League rival.

Newcastle United could be handed an opportunity to sign a long-term target by Premier League rivals Manchester United.

The Red Devils have experienced a relatively quiet summer transfer window with England midfielder Mason Mount representing their only new addition after the Chelsea star completed a £55million move to Old Trafford last week. The 13-time Premier League champions remain in talks over a deal for Inter Milan goalkeeper Andre Onana and The Independent has revealed they remain keen on Atalanta striker Rasmus Hojlund as Erik ten Hag looks to strengthen his options in the final third.

Another midfield remains on the agenda for the former Ajax manager and the report confirms the Red Devils have ‘made initial overtures’ to Serie A club Fiorentina over a possible move for Morocco World Cup star Sofyan Amrabat. However, a deal for the combative midfielder is dependent on Ten Hag authorising the departure of a number of members of his squad.

The likes of Harry Maguire and Fred have been linked with moves away from Old Trafford and West Ham United are believed to be keen on a move for midfielder Scott McTominay once Declan Rice finally completes his £105million move to Premier League rivals Arsenal.

Newcastle retain an interest in the Scotland international and Eddie Howe is believed to be an admirer of the 26-year-old, who has been heavily linked with a move to Tyneside throughout the last year. There was speculation the Magpies had made a loan enquiry for McTominay in January but that was refuted by Howe in the final days of the transfer window.
