Harry Kane is tipped to leave Tottenham Hotspur this summer and Alan Shearer has joked he can join Newcastle United - on one condition.

Following another trophyless season in North London - and one that could end without European qualification - for England’s record goalscorer, Shearer is among the pundits to have advised Kane to move on.

“If it was me, personally, in his situation now - yeah, I would look at my options,” Shearer told Match of the Day. “He has been so loyal to Tottenham and so brilliant for Tottenham.

“I don’t think any Tottenham fan could complain if he said: ‘Look, I’ve done my time and I have got to look elsewhere.”

Former United and Tottenham midfielder Jermaine Jenas also weighed in.

“I think that (little hope next season) is the thing that’s most upsetting for fans,” he said. “There is no doubt that teams can go through tough times and so on and so forth - if you lose managers.

“But there doesn’t seem to be a path or direction. There’s no manager, no style of play. Who is staying? Who is going? And their biggest problem: their best player. No one knows what is happening with Harry Kane right now.”

Kane is chasing down Shearer’s record as the all-time top scorer in the Premier League, with his strike in Spurs’ 3-1 loss to Brentford on Saturday taking him 49 behind the Magpies legend’s 260 goals.

Indeed, the 52-year-old is desperate to remain on the top and permitted Kane to move to St James’ Park “only to sit him on the bench so he doesn’t break the record!”

Shearer’s response was laughed at by host Gary Lineker, who replied: “Or Bayern Munich, he can go somewhere else.”

While Kane is expected to attract a host of European interest, Manchester United are exploring the possibility of keeping the 29-year-old in the Premier League.
