Social media went into uproar once news emerged that the Magpies have begun negotiations with Crystal Palace. The Athletic claim Toon chiefs are the only club to commence “meaningful talks” for the defender.

Centre-back is understood to be a priority for Newcastle, with Sven Botman and Jamaal Lascelles injured until the winter. Fabian Schar and Dan Burn are also on the wrong side of 30 - paving the way for fresh blood.

NewcastleWorld understands a right-sided centre-back is the priority amid links to AC Milan defender Malick Thiaw. Although Guehi predominantly plays on the left, he is right-footed and technically proficient so should adapt with ease.

Guehi played six of England’s seven games at Euro 2024 on their way to final heartbreak against Spain. Forming a formidable partnership with John Stones, the 24-year-old’s stock vastly raised throughout the tournament.

Newcastle fans will recall a teasing during the Euros when, speaking to England’s YouTube channel, the Palace man lauded St James’ Park. These comments also came just weeks after the Three Lions travelled to Tyneside for a pre-tournament friendly.

“I’d say in the Premier League, probably Newcastle, St James’ Park,” Guehi, a product of Chelsea's academy before joining the Eagles in 2021, said when asked about his favourite top-flight ground. “It’s just really, really loud in there. The fans make it really difficult when we go there so probably St James’ Park.”
