Mehrdad Ghodoussi faces wrath of Newcastle United supporters with cheeky 18-word Sunderland message
Newcastle United and Sunderland will face each other in the Premier League again.
The Tyne-Wear derby will grace the Premier League again next season.
For the first time in nine years, Newcastle United will face Sunderland in England’s top flight. The Black Cats secured their return with a 2-1 victory over Sheffield United in the Championship play-off final.
Regis le Bris’ side fell behind in the first half when Tyrese Campbell opened the scoring but goals from Eliezer Mayenda and Tommy Watson inside the remaining quarter of an hour completed a dramatic comeback.
When will the Premier League announce Newcastle United v Sunderland date?
So, when will next season’s derbies take place? Well, the Premier League have confirmed the 2025-26 fixtures will be released on Wednesday, June 18.
A Premier League statement read: “The release of the fixtures for the 2025/26 Premier League season has been confirmed to take place at 09:00 BST on Wednesday 18 June 2025.
“Dates for all 380 matches will be released at that time on premierleague.com and via the Premier League's official app.
“The Premier League 2025/26 season dates have been confirmed, with the opening match round starting on Saturday 16 August 2025.
“The final match round will be played on Sunday 24 May 2026, when all matches will kick off simultaneously as usual. The 2025/26 season will consist of 33 weekends and five midweek match rounds.
“The schedule continues to allow more rest time for players over the festive match-round period, with no two rounds taking place within 60 hours of each other. This is in keeping with commitments made to clubs to address the congested Christmas and New Year schedule.
“The start date of 16 August allows for the maximum player rest time available – 83 clear days – from the end of the 2024/25 season.
“The season end date of 24 May 2026 ensures the Premier League season finishes ahead of the FIFA 2026 World Cup call-up period. There will be no fixture on 24 December 2025.”
Former Newcastle United co-owner sends message to Sunderland
Former Newcastle co-owner Mehrdad Ghodoussi has already sent a cheeky message to Sunderland, teasing next season’s Tyne-Wear derbies.
He wrote on X: “Congratulations @SunderlandAFC make sure you train hard over the summer….you’ll need the practice before those derby fixtures #HWTL#NUFC”
But after receiving backlash from some supporters, Ghodoussi was forced to defend his post, adding: “It’s called sarcasm guys.”
Ghodoussi and Amanda Staveley bid an emotional farewell to the Magpies last July after their remaining shares were acquired by PIF and RB Sports & Media at an 85%/15% split.
