In just five days Newcastle United will make the long-awaited return to Wembley Stadium for the Carabao Cup final. Eddie Howe’s side will be looking to ensure their first Premier League loss since August last weekend against Liverpool doesn’t dampen spirits ahead of taking on Manchester United in London.

As preparations for the final continue, transfer rumours and off-the-pitch news continue to swirl around Newcastle United.

Mason Mount to St James’ Park

Newcastle United is being touted as the ‘perfect’ destination for Chelsea and England star Mason Mount, should he wantaway from Stamford Bridge this summer.

Recent reports suggest that contract talks with the 24-year-old have been paused until the summer as Mount enters the final year of his deal.

Liverpool are thought to be leading the race for the star, with Manchester City and Real Madrid also interested, but pundit Stan Collymore believes a move to the North East might be tempting Mount.

He told Caught Offside: “Personally, I would be very surprised if he left. He’s one of their own and has the potential to finish his career as a bit of a legend like John Terry and Frank Lampard, but, obviously, with 18 months left on his deal and no agreement to renew it yet, it is possible that he leaves in the summer.

“If the lad is seriously considering his future, a switch to Newcastle would be absolutely perfect for him. I wonder if Howe and the Magpies’ hierarchy feels the same way.

“Mount is not only the type of energetic player who would fit the Geordies’ system brilliantly, but he’s also an English Champions League winner who hasn’t yet [hit] his prime so he’d be a huge signing and would send a major signal of intent.”

Loris Karius chills with girlfriend in Milan

All Newcastle fans can talk about at the moment is Loris Karius ahead of the Carabao Cup final. Nick Pope’s red card against Liverpool combined with Martin Dubravka being cup-tied means that the German, who has never played for The Magpies, is set to play at Wembley Stadium.

It’s just a few days until what would be Karius’ biggest career moment for five years since that nightmare Champions League final for Liverpool in 2018, the shot-stopper was snapped miles and miles away from Newcastle. Karius enjoyed a coffee with partner Diletta Leotta in Milan on Tuesday as preparations for Sunday continue on Tyneside.

Eddie Howe has insisted the keeper is match ready. He said: “They’ve started games away from competitive action in several friendlies and training games. I’d say they’re match ready.

“I would have confidence in them, that’s what they’re in the squad for. They’ve both been very competitive and part of our group all season. I have full confidence.”
