Newcastle United, now one of the richest clubs in the world, will be looking to add new star players to their ranks in the January transfer window. Who does Eddie Howe have lined up to join the Magpies mid-season?
The Geordies are eyeing up a potential bargain for a Dutch winger, who once played his football at Manchester United. However, his former club are also reportedly in the hunt for his signature.

Meanwhile, Newcastle are also hoping to sign a Spanish starlet who plays for Real Valladolid. However, the 18-year-old’s sizeable release clause could prove to be an insurmountable blockade.
Finally, the future of Chris Wood has also been called into question recently. Out of favour at St. James’ Park, for how much longer will he remain at Newcastle?
Newcastle looking to sign Memphis Depay
Memphis Depay, who underwhelmed during his time in the Premier League, could be set for a return to England’s top flight very soon. Newcastle, according to the The People’s Person, have been “offered the opportunity” to snap him up.
His contract with Barcelona is up in the summer - he could leave the Catalonian giants for a fee as small as £9 million in January. Depay, 28, has scored 76 goals for Lyon and Barcelona since leaving the Red Devils in 2017.

Newcastle aren’t the only club who are hoping to sign him, however. Manchester United are also looking to re-sign the Dutch superstar and could be a replacement for the now-departed Cristiano Ronaldo.
Magpies in pursuit of Spanish wonderkid
Newcastle are seeking to secure the signature of a 18-year-old Spanish wonderkid , according to Geordie Boot Boys - Ivan Fresneda. Despite this, his release clause could be an issue - it stands at £26 million.
Not only this, once Fresneda makes 22 senior appearances, this clause will rise to £39 million. This has put the Newcastle hierarchy in somewhat of a dilemma - do they opt to sign Fresneda now, or risk paying a larger fee in the future? Currently, the Magpies are only willing to pay around £13 million to sign him.
Chris Wood hoping to stay at Newcastle
Chris Wood has become somewhat of a forgotten man at St. James’ Park. He is the Geordies’ third choice striker behind Alexander Isak and Callum Wilson, but appears keen to see out his contract with Newcastle, according to The Chronicle.

Wood signed for Newcastle just under a year ago for £25 million, back in January of 2022. His contract expires in the summer of 2024 and he is keen to stay at the club, saying : “I’d love to be here long-term. Or even longer than I will be.
“I still believe I have a big part to play here. I have not shown my best football here yet but hopefully I can do that given the chance. If not I am here to support the club and push them in the right direction. I am committed here and want to be here.”
