Newcastle United’s official X account couldn’t resist a cheeky dig at Manchester United following their 3-0 victory at Old Trafford in the Carabao Cup.
Despite Eddie Howe making eight changes to his starting XI, four of which were making their first starts of the 2023-24 season, the Magpies progressed into the last competition with relative ease.

Come the final 10 minutes, the majority of Man United fans had enough and began to exit Old Trafford. It was during the same period the PA announcer confirmed an attendance of 72,484 and Newcastle’s social media admin couldn’t help but poke fun on X, formerly known as Twitter.
“Tonight’s attendance at Old Trafford is 72,000. Slightly less now,” the post read.
The 7,000 travelling Geordies had mocked Man United throughout the evening. Chants of ‘Old Trafford is falling down’ and ‘Shearer turned you down’ were often heard, while they also chanted to Man United boss Erik Ten Hag ‘you’re getting sacked in the morning’.

“It means everything to us and hopefully it means everything to them [the fans],” said Magpies’ head coach Eddie Howe. “You could see the reaction at the end how big it was and the connection between us and the supporters.
“They knew today we were in a tough moment. We were making changes to the team because of a lot of injuries and that can sometimes elevate your unity. If we didn’t have that aspect to our game today we would have found it very difficult.”
