Newcastle United have been credited with an interest in Real Betis midfielder William Carvalho.

The sale of the 30-year-old Portugal international is said to be ‘key’ for the La Liga outfit as they look to ‘unlock’ finances to help add to their squad during the January transfer window. Spanish outlet Fichajes have claimed Carvalho has ‘numerous offers’ to end his four-year stay at Betis after joining the Verdiblancos in a £13m deal from Sporting Lisbon in the summer of 2018.

Carvalho had been tipped for big things before that deal came to fruition, with his former coach Luis Goncalves suggesting a move to one of Europe’s big leagues was always part of his future following the collapse of a potential move to West Ham United.

He told Portuguese outlet Desporto Ao Minuto: “It is only natural that he wants to make the leap, just like any player at his level. As a professional William has to continue to contribute to the team when he is picked. The professionalism of a player can not be called into question by the fact that a transfer does not take place or because he is more often seated on the bench, the player has to be professional and William would never play badly because of it.”

Carvalho helped Betis win only their third Copa del Rey earlier this year when they came through a penalty shoot-out after a 1-1 draw with Valencia and he has continued to be a regular presence in their midfield during a promising start to the current season. As he prepares to represent Portugal at the World Cup Finals, Carvalho has left behind a Betis side sat in sixth place in La Liga.

However, talk has now turned towards a possible move away from Spain and Newcastle, Arsenal, Leicester City and Turkish side Fenerbache are all said to keen to over him a route out of Betis and give the La Liga club a boost to their transfer funds.
