Newcastle United are reportedly trying to sign Bayer Leverkusen defender Piero Hincapie. The 21-year-old has caught the eye playing in the Bundesliga and is being tipped for a bright future in the game.

According to Football Insider, the Magpies are holding ‘talks’ with him in London over a potential transfer to the North East. The report suggests that fellow Premier League side Everton are in discussions too as they look for reinforcements.

Hincapie, who is an Ecuador international with 41 caps under his belt, has also been linked with Tottenham Hotspur this month. The Sun have reported that Spurs are ‘weighing’ up a £20million offer so he doesn’t appear to be short of suitors in England.

Newcastle could see him as someone to give them more competition and depth in their defensive department. The centre-back is also young so has the potential to develop in the future and has already racked up 76 senior games so far in his career.

He started out in the academies at C.S. Norte América and Deportivo Azogues before being snapped up by Independiente del Valle. Hincapie then played three times for their first-team before Talleres lured him to Argentina, where he would spend 12 months prior to his move to Europe with Leverkusen.

The youngster has adapted well to life in Germany and has played 51 matches to date. However, Xabi Alonso’s side are facing a battle to keep hold of him in this transfer window with Newcastle battling it out with Everton and potentially Spurs for his signature.
