Newcastle United are one of several clubs looking to take advantage of a reported ‘firesale’ at Premier League rivals Chelsea during the summer transfer window.

The Blues have embarked on an exuberant spending spree since a consortium led by American businessmen Todd Boehly took control at Stamford Bridge. The new owners have spent just short of £500m as the likes of World Cup winner Enzo Fernandez, highly-rated Ukraine winger Mykhaylo Mudryk and Monaco defender Benoit Badiashile have moved to West London.

But off-field ambitions have not converted into on-field success as Thomas Tuchel and successor Graham Potter both struggled to help Chelsea challenge at the top end of the Premier League table. Potter left the club earlier this month and has since been replaced by Blues legend Frank Lampard after he was appointed on a deal until the end of the season - but a a home defeat against Brighton and Hove Albion has left his side sat in the bottom half of the Premier League table.

With thoughts already turning towards next season, The Mirror have claimed Chelsea are ready to offload several of their players and there are suggestions Liverpool are keen on making a move for highly-rated centre-back Levi Colwill and England midfield duo Mason Mount and Conor Gallagher.

Newcastle are believed to be long-term admirers in the latter of that trio after reportedly making unsuccessful offers for the former Crystal Palace loan star during the last three transfer windows. Gallagher was also said to be a target for the Magpies during Steve Bruce’s managerial reign.

The report has stated Newcastle have ‘identified’ Gallagher as a possible addition to their midfield next season as they look to boost their squad in what looks like it will be a season when European football returns to St James Park for the first time in a decade.
