Writing on Twitter and Instagram from a hospital in the Netherlands, van der Sar said: "First of all, we want to thank everyone for all the great and supportive messages. I’m happy to share that I’m no longer in the intensive care unit. However, I’m still in hospital. I hope to go home next week and take the next step in my recovery!"
Famous names from across the sport flocked to the comments to welcome the good news and wish the former Ajax CEO well on his recovery, one of whom is a famous former Magpie.
Given, who made 463 appearances for Newcastle United, faced van der Sar both for Newcastle United and in the Manchester derby when playing at Manchester City.
