Newcastle United have reportedly made a late move to secure a loan deal for Tottenham Hotspur winger Lucas Moura.

The former Paris Saint-Germain star is yet to make a start for Antonio Conte’s side this season and has only featured for a total of 12 minutes as a substitute in their first two games of the campaign.

After appearing as a substitute in the opening day win over Southampton and the draw at Chelsea, Moura remained on the bench for their narrow win at Wolverhampton Wanderers.

Spurs boss Conte revealed a tendon injury was the reason behind Moura’s absence from this week’s meetings with Nottingham Forest and West Ham United - but that has not stopped speculation over a move away from North London.

Speaking ahead of the draw at West Ham, the former Inter manager said: “About Lucas, he has this inflammation in his tendon.

“I hope to recover him very soon, because for sure when I was a player, I had a lot of pain in my tendon.

“You know very well tendon inflammation doesn’t finish in only one week, two weeks. I hope to have him early with us.”

Aston Villa have been linked with a move for the Brazilian international in recent days and Football Insider have now suggested Newcastle have made a ‘deadline-busting move’ to take Moura on a season-long loan deal.

The 30-year-old would be significant experience of playing in the Premier League and European football after scoring 38 goals and providing 27 assists in 204 appearances since joining Spurs from PSG in a £25.5million deal in January 2018.

Moura has already spoken about his future at Spurs and confirmed his current contract status.

Speaking during the summer, he said: “The idea is to fulfil the contract. It has one more year, with the option of one more, on the part of the club.

“So at the end of this season now, if the club wants to extend another year, they have that option.

“But my idea is this. Finalising the contract, playing in the Champions League, we haven’t played the Champions League for two years, and now it could be, perhaps, my last Champions League there at Tottenham. So then the idea is to stay there, fulfil the contract, then be free, then decide where I’m going.”

The Magpies are said to be keen to add a winger to their squad before the transfer window closes at 11pm on Thursday night.

The likes of Leeds United star Jack Harrison and PSV Eindhoven’s Cody Gakpo have also been linked with a move to Tyneside - although PSV Eindhoven have expressed their desire to retain the service of the latter amid interest from several Premier League clubs.
