Newcastle United have reportedly held talks with the representatives of Monaco defender Axel Disasi.

The 25-year-old has established himself as a key player at the Ligue 1 club since joining from Reims for £10million in the summer of 2020.

Disasi has gone on to make over 125 appearances in all competitions and his form last season earned him a maiden call-up to senior France squad. He became the first French international debutant during a World Cup since 1966.

The centre-back has been linked with several clubs around Europe in recent months but transfer expert Fabrizio Romano claims both Newcastle and Manchester United are ‘exploring’ a move.

The Magpies and Man United have approached Disasi’s side but neither club is yet to open talks with Monaco. The French club reportedly value Disasi at around £34m.

Romano tweeted: “Newcastle and Manchester United are both exploring Disasi deal, no bids yet Newcastle approached player side this week, expected to make contact with Monaco. Ten Hag approved Disasi — talks for weeks on player side but still waiting for approach with Monaco.”

United head coach Eddie Howe has identified central defence as an area to strengthen this summer. Disasi, who is right-footed, would likely rival Fabian Schar for a starting spot.

Newcastle are also understood to have shown an interest in Fulham defender Tosin Adarabioyo. The former Manchester City youngster could be available on a cut-price deal after turning down a new contract, which expires in 12 months.
