The return could make next season a lot more intense.

Other United fans, however, hope the Black Cats never set foot in the Premier League ever again.

Football Away Days reposted a clip to Twitter (via @GJ_1892) of Sunderland fans being escorted by the police up to St James’ Park alongside the words: ‘Sunderland fans with a police escort for an intimidating walk to Newcastle’s St James’ park for derby day, back in the day.

‘I personally would love to see this derby back as a regular league fixture, it’s up there with the best in the country.’

With the last Tyne-Wear derby being in 2016, some of the younger United fans may have yet to experience the chaos they bring.

But after they finished sixth in the Championship after years of struggling the club has the chance to return to the top flight in the playoffs.
