Newcastle United co-owner sends four-word message to supporters ahead of Manchester City cup clash

Newcastle United co-owner Mehrdad Ghodoussi has urged supporters to bring their scarfs to this evening’s Carabao Cup third round clash against Manchester City at St James’ Park.

The Magpies return to League Cup action having reached the final at Wembley last season. Eddie Howe’s side suffered a 2-0 defeat to Manchester United but that has only fuelled their desire to end the club’s 55-year wait for a trophy.

"We are well aware of our hunt for a trophy here,” said Howe. “It is pushing us all. This is a competition we take very seriously. We would love that to be a trophy that we want to win so we will do everything we can to try and do it.

"That experience [Wembley] has driven us all forward because the experience of the run to get to the final was something we really enjoyed. The final, itself, we didn’t because we didn’t get the outcome we wanted but it’s there in the back of our minds.

“We know the Premier League is intense and very difficult and, of course, we have got European competition but this, with the FA Cup, which our recent performances haven’t been strong in, are competitions we take seriously."

Ahead of kick-off, supporters group Wor Flags has again launched a social media plea for fellow fans to #BringYourScarf. The same initiative was successful during wins against Leicester City and Southampton en route to Wembley last season.

“We return to League Cup action this coming Wednesday against the Champions of England, Manchester City,” a Wor Flags message read.

“Last season, no fewer than four opponents felt the wrath of Eddie Howe’s Mighty Mags at St James’ Park and this season, once again we’re hoping that YOU can play your part by joining in our #BringYourScarf campaign.

“Let’s get behind the lads and go one step further this season!”

Newcastle United’s official X account and Ghodoussi have both thrown their support with the latter posting “don’t forget your scarves”.

Howe’s players will require the support of the St James’ Park crowd tonight as they take on last season’s treble winners. Since taking charge of Newcastle in November 2021, Man City are one of only three teams Howe has lost to on home turf.
