Newcastle United are currently without January signing Harrison Ashby as the right-back is sidelined with a hamstring injury.

Magpies head coach Eddie Howe, speaking ahead of Sunday’s Premier League clash against Wolves, explained why the 21-year-old hasn’t been named in a matchday squad since his £3million move from West Ham United.

Howe said: “Harrison picked up a very small hamstring problem, so he hasn’t trained with the group for a few weeks.”

It is a setback for the Milton Keynes-born defender, who joined Newcastle short of match fitness and sharpness having played just two senior games this season - both in the Europa Conference League.

Howe said previously Ashby is very much a player for the future, i.e an understudy to Kieran Trippier, but a lack of training time is unlikely to help as he settles into his new life on Tyneside.

In wider team news ahead of the visit of Wolves to St James’ Park on Sunday, Howe won’t have Joelinton at his disposal as the Brazilian serves the first of his two-match suspension.

Emil Krafth remains sidelined with an ACL injury, and is unlikely to play again this campaign. Ryan Fraser, meanwhile, continues to train with the under-21s after Howe hinted the Scot wasn’t fully committed to United last week.

In better news for United, Fabian Schar and Bruno Guimaraes are fit. Schar missed the 2-0 defeat at Manchester City through concussion protocols, while Guimaraes had trouble with his ankle.

“No, I think he’s fine,” Howe said on Guimaraes. “I don’t think he’s missed any training from that ankle. I think it was sore initially against Manchester United but he was back training no problem.

“The initial one [against Fulham] caused him to miss some training but touch wood, I don’t see a long-term problem.”
