The Magpies are hoping to fend off interested parties and tie him down to a new contract.

Newcastle United are still looking to offload some senior players in order to keep well within the Premier League’s financial guidelines this summer. The Magpies have already sanctioned the sales of Yankuba Minteh and Elliot Anderson but other players remain linked to exits before the 2024/25 season comes into play.

One man who appears to be off the cards for rival clubs though is Anthony Gordon, amid ongoing speculation that he could be leaving St James’ Park. Liverpool have been the main club in the running to sign the winger, with a huge back-and-forth suggesting that Gordon could be headed for a lucrative transfer to his boyhood club.

There have been a lot of contrasting reports since the initial link emerged on the transfer rumour mill. The Telegraph reported earlier this month that Gordon had been ‘denied his dream move’ as Liverpool had failed to meet the asking price set. The 23-year-old had been ‘extremely keen’ on the idea of moving back to Merseyside to play in red and even thought at one point that he would be making the switch before talks fizzled out.

Another report from ESPN claimed that Liverpool had turned down the opportunity to sign Gordon as Newcastle were looking for a part-exchange deal involving centre-back Jarell Quansah. While talks diluted significantly after this, they did not disappear completely.

However, fortunately for Newcastle fans, the club have every intention of cementing Gordon’s place within the squad for the upcoming season and beyond. TEAMtalk initially reported that the Magpies are ‘growing in confidence’ over the winger’s future and they could present him with a ‘new and improved’ contract to tie down his services.

Now, according to CaughtOffside, Newcastle are ‘keen’ to extend Gordon’s current terms and those high up within the club want to keep him on the books until the summer of 2029. The report claims that ‘talks over a renewal are set to take place shortly’.

After contributing 12 goals and 11 assists last season, it’s not hard to see why the Magpies are not willing to see the versatile winger leave this summer. While Liverpool have been interested in Gordon for some time now, Manchester United and Chelsea have also been linked. Newcastle have been doing all they can to keep Gordon at St James’ Park, including the hefty £100 million price tag they put in place.

“Anthony Gordon is a crucial player for us, we didn’t want to lose anybody,” manager Eddie Howe recently discussed via Fabrizio Romano. “Why would we want to lose our best players? We fought really hard to make the right decisions. In those last few weeks it was very, very difficult. But it will be okay with Gordon.”
