Newcastle United fans will be counting down the days until the start of the new Premier League season.

The Magpies take on Nottingham Forest this weekend, and fans will be eager to see Eddie Howe’s men in action after an exciting summer.

Newcastle have already added key men to their squad, spending to do so, and they are not likely to be done just yet.

Howe wants a new striker, and there could be further areas in need of strengthening ahead of the summer window slamming shut at the end of the month.

With that in mind, we have rounded up all the latest transfer news and rumours surrounding St James’ Park.

Maddison blow

Newcastle have reportedly made a second bid for James Maddison, but they are not likely to get far.

According to Craig Hope, the Magpies’ latest offer is worth £40million, worth £20million less than Leicester’s £60million valuation.

Hope claims Leicester are likely to reject the second offer, and Newcastle are going to have to pay significantly more to get their man.

Maddison stance

Maddison is not said to want a move to Newcastle, or at least not without a huge pay packet.

According to insider Dean Jones, the Magpies are chasing a dead end as things stand, with Leicester nor Maddison particularly interested in a deal.

“I was told they haven’t received any encouragement from Leicester to do so [continue bidding],” Jones told GiveMeSport. “And they also haven’t had any encouragement that the player actually wants to join them.

“Newcastle will have to make Maddison their highest-paid player if there is any chance of this coming off.”

Maddison is likely to want a step up to a club competing at the very top of the table, and Newcastle are still a long way from that as things stand.
