Newcastle United duo at risk of Carabao Cup ban - on two conditions
Two Newcastle United players are at risk of suspension against Everton this evening.
Newcastle United have three players at risk of a Carabao Cup suspension heading into Thursday night’s match against Everton at the Hill Dickinson Stadium.
Carabao Cup rules dictate that any player who is booked twice in the competition before the semi-final stage must serve a one-match ban in the competition should their side progress.
While yellow card suspensions do not carry over between competitions, red card suspensions do. Should a player be sent off in the Carabao Cup, they will be banned for the upcoming domestic matches regardless of the competition. The same goes for red cards in the Premier League and FA Cup.

Newcastle head into Thursday’s match with two players at risk of suspension should they be booked and Matthias Jaissle’s side progress.
Newcastle United duo at risk of Carabao Cup ban
Jacob Ramsey was booked in Newcastle’s 1-0 win over Millwall in the previous round, while Sean Steur was shown a yellow card in the win over West Bromwich Albion back in August. Goalkeeper Ewen Jaouen was also booked in the West Brom match but has been ruled out of the trip to Everton due to a hamstring injury.
But with Ramsey now back from injury, there is a chance he could be involved in the last-16 tie at the Hill Dickinson Stadium along with Steur. Although Jaissle has hinted at few changes following the 2-0 Premier League win at Crystal Palace on Sunday, both Steur and Ramsey came off the bench in the closing stages of the match at Selhurst Park.
Should either be booked against Everton and Newcastle win, they would be banned for the quarter-final tie away to League Two side Fleetwood Town.
After the quarter-final matches, all bookings are wiped. However, if a player picks up their second Carabao Cup booking in the quarter-final and their side progress, they would be ruled out of the first leg of the semi-final. Newcastle have experienced various bans related to the Carabao Cup in recent years.
In 2023, Nick Pope missed the Carabao Cup final defeat after receiving a straight red card against Liverpool in the Premier League. Anthony Gordon missed the Carabao Cup final win over Liverpool in 2025 after being sent off against Brighton & Hove Albion in the FA Cup.
Bruno Guimaraes was banned for three Premier League matches after being sent off in the Carabao Cup semi-final second leg against Southampton in 2023. He also missed the first leg of the Carabao Cup semi-final win against Arsenal in 2025 after being shown his second booking in the competition in the quarter-final win over Brentford.
What about Premier League bookings?
Newcastle have no players at immediate risk of suspension in the Premier League heading into the match against Everton at St James’ Park on Monday night.
Jacob Murphy, Yoane Wissa and Nico Gonzalez have all been booked three times and will need another two bookings in Newcastle’s next 11 league matches before the 19 game cut-off point in order to face a five booking ban. Joelinton and Sven Botman have been booked twice in the Premier League while Lewis Hall, Fabian Schar, Anthony Elanga, Lukas Hornicek, Tino Livramento, Lewis Miley, William Osula and Jacob Ramsey all have one booking each.
