Newcastle United have reportedly lodged an interest in Eintracht Frankfurt star Djibril Sow.

The Swiss midfielder started his career with FC Zurich and made an initial move to Bundesliga club Borussia Monchengladbach in 2016, before returning to Switzerland with Young Boys 12 months later. After becoming a two-time Swiss Super League winner, Sow would earn a move back to Germany when he joined Eintracht in a reported £7m deal in the summer of 2019 and he has become a consistent figure in their side ever since.

Sow has now made over a century of appearances for Die Adler and was part of the side that won last season’s Europa League with a penalty shoot-out win against Glasgow Rangers. Sow’s form earned him a place in Switzerland’s World Cup squad and he featured in all three of their group stage games as they claimed wins against Serbia and Cameroon and suffered a narrow defeat to Brazil. He is expected to be part of their first knockout round tie with Portugal on Tuesday night and he will head into the game with speculation over his future being discussed in Germany.

German news outlet Bild have claimed Newcastle have a concrete interest in the midfielder and are ‘putting out feelers’ over a possible deal for a player that has 18 months remaining on his current contract. Premier League rivals Arsenal and Nottingham Forest have also been mentioned as possible suitors, with the latter looking to complete a successful move for a player they tried to sign during the summer.

The midfielder has already discussed the possibility of a move to England, saying: “I have never made a secret of the fact that the Premier League is my wish and goal. It was also hugely lucrative for Eintracht Frankfurt. But my gut feeling decided that I should stay here.”

The lucrative came from Premier League newcomers Forest, as their £20m offer for Sow was accepted by the Bundesliga club, only for the midfielder to reportedly reject a move to the City Ground.
