Newcastle United handed injury boost ahead of Hull City as 6ft 6in star spotted back in training

Newcastle United injuries: The Magpies have been handed a minor injury boost ahead of Saturday’s Premier League clash.

Newcastle United welcomed goalkeeper Ewen Jaouen back to training this week after a three-game absence with an ankle injury.

Nick Pope has been on the bench for Newcastle’s last three matches as back-up goalkeeper to Lukas Hornicek. As reported by the Gazette, Jaouen has been back in training this week with the hope of being involved in the matchday squad for Saturday’s Premier League clash against Hull City at St James’ Park (3pm kick-off).

Jaouen had been the preferred option on the bench under Jaissle after Pope was made available to leave but failed to secure an exit before the transfer deadline. The 20-year-old goalkeeper, who joined Newcastle from Stade de Reims in the summer for £18million, suffered an ankle injury in training on the eve of Newcastle’s last home match against AFC Bournemouth a fortnight ago.

That saw Pope return to the side for the match against the Cherries and keep his place on the bench against Millwall and Leeds.

Jaouen went for a scan on his ankle before seeing a specialist in London last week, which allayed fears of a serious injury. Training ground footage released by Newcastle United this week then showed Jaouen being put through his paces alongside Lukas Hornicek and Aidan Harris.

Saturday’s match will likely see Hornicek keep his place in goal as Newcastle look to pick up their first home win of the new Premier League season and bounce back from a 4-1 defeat at Leeds United last time out.

Newly-promoted Hull have made an unbeaten start to the new season with eight points from their opening four games.
