Eddie Howe is prepared to ring the changes for Newcastle United’s second round Carabao Cup tie at Tranmere Rovers - with five players unlikely to be available.

As well as Callum Wilson, who has undergone a scan on a hamstring issue that forced him off against Manchester City in the 70th-minute on Sunday, the Magpies are set to be without Ryan Fraser, Dan Burn, Matt Targett and Jonjo Shelvey.

Fraser was named as a substitute versus City but was unable to make it off the bench after picking up a groin injury in the warm-up.

Like Wilson, the Scotland international has gone for a scan. “The situation is the same,” Howe revealed. “Scan, awaiting the results. Again, we hope it’s not too serious.”

Burn won’t make the trip to Prenton Park after suffering a concussion during injury time when a clearance by his own teammate Sven Botman hit the Blyth-born defender straight in the face.

“Dan Burn, who came off after being hit in the head with the ball, I think he’ll miss the game,” Howe admitted. “Physically we gave so much to the game versus Manchester City that naturally there’s a few tired bodies.”

Targett is edging closer to a return after missing games against Brighton and Hove Albion and Man City with a dead leg, however is unlikely to be risk at Tranmere.

Howe said: “Matt’s doing well.

“He was close against Manchester City but we didn’t really want to take that risk having not really had a big training day with him in 14 days.

“We felt it was probably too big of a risk to start him but he’s very close to being fit.”

Shelvey, of course, is a long-term injury for Howe’s side.

The midfielder injured his hamstring during the 3-2 Eusebio Cup defeat in pre-season to Benfica and is not forecasted to return until December.
