Newcastle United issue official Alexander Isak injury update ahead of Brighton FA Cup clash

Newcastle United boss Eddie Howe issues Alexander Isak injury update ahead of facing Brighton in the fifth round of the FA Cup.

Newcastle United are yet to decide whether Alexander Isak will be involved in Sunday’s FA Cup fifth-round clash against Brighton and Hove Albion.

The 25-year-old travelled to Anfield on Wednesday but wasn’t included in the squad that lost 2-0 to Premier League champions Liverpool due to a groin issue.

It was at midday on the day of the game that Eddie Howe decided not to risk Isak, who is the Magpies’ top scorer this campaign with 21 goals in all competitions.

He will again be assessed for the visit of Brighton to St James’ Park, where United are hoping to advance into the quarter-finals of the competition for the second successive season.

“Yeah, we'll see today,” Howe said. “I haven't seen him since the game, so we'll see how he is today, have a long discussion with him, I'm sure. We don't think it's a long-term problem.

“In part, obviously there was no risk taken on Wednesday and there can't be with the stage of the season that we're in.

“Well, there's always a risk with any player. Even if they're 100% fit, that's the world that we're in, but we wouldn't take any risks on his long-term fitness. But we'll see how he is today and if he's fit, he'll play.”
