Newcastle United’s performance in Saturday’s 4-0 win over Premier League rivals Crystal Palace has been recognised by the stats experts.

Newcastle United’s remarkable run of form continued when Crystal Palace were simply swatted aside at St James Park on Saturday afternoon.

There were barely five minutes on the clock when the Magpies opened the scoring as Fabian Schar and Kieran Trippier combined to allow Jacob Murphy to net his first St James Park goal since April and put Eddie Howe’s side on their way to what would be a comfortable win.

A quickfire double just before half-time from Anthoyn Gordon and Sean Longstaff rounded off a dominant opening 45 minutes from the Magpies and they put the cap on their seventh win in their last eight games in all competitions when Murphy’s sumptuous pass allowed Callum Wilson to grab his fifth goal of the season midway through the second-half.

The win took United into the top five of the Premier League table for 24 hours - although they slipped to sixth when Aston Villa cantered to a comfortable home win against West Ham United on Sunday afternoon.

The Magpies performance was recognised in the WhoScored Premier League Team of the Week after United stars were named in the eleven, including one player who acheived the highest matching rating in the top tier.
