A scathing tweet about Gareth Southgate and Newcastle United’s Sean Longstaff has gone viral.

It’s long been thought Sean Longstaff is deserving of his first England call-up due to his incredible form since Newcastle United’s takeover.

Eddie Howe is open in his belief that the North Shields player is one of the fittest in the Premier League. And having found the back of the net on three occasions already this season, it seems Newcastle fans are not alone in their England dreams for Longstaff.

After United’s 4-0 win over Crystal Palace on Saturday social media was singing the 25-year-old’s praises. But it’s one particularly harsh tweet that caught everyone’s attention and has now been seen by over 200,000 people.

Gambling company Paddy Power was scathing about England manager Gareth Southgate, writing:

‘Energy, consistency and goals for one of the best sides in the Premier League. If Sean Longstaff is serious about impressing Gareth Southgate, he’ll need to cut those things out of his game ASAP.’

Southgate has faced backlash on numerous occasions for calling up players who get very little game time over those believed to be in better form.

Kieran Trippier was the only Newcastle player to be called up by Gareth Southgate last time around, with Nick Pope, Callum Wilson and the in-form Anthony Gordon also overlooked. Longstaff has never represented England, not even at youth level. But it’s something Eddie Howe thinks could happen for the Geordie player.

“I haven’t spoken with Sean in any great detail about the England squad or his dreams and aims, but I’d encourage it for him because I think he is good enough.

“I think he’s got everything depending on what system you want to play but for us, he perfectly fits the number eight role that we’re using him in.

“I’d love to see him score more goals and get in more goal scoring positions because I think he is a very good finisher – you saw the other night with a really good goal – so hopefully there’s more to come from him.

“But he’s certainly done very well at the start of this season.”
