Newcastle United make ‘enquiry’ for Chelsea and England midfielder targeted by Steve Bruce

It is not the first time the midfielder has been linked with a move to Tyneside.

Newcastle United are set to revisit their interest in a midfielder targeted by former manager Steve Bruce.

Chelsea star Conor Gallagher is reportedly back on the Magpies radar after impressing during a season-long loan at Premier League rivals Crystal Palace.

The 22-year-old midfielder has now enjoyed four successful loan spells away from Stamford Bridge after shining during temporary stints at Charlton Athletic, Swansea City, West Bromwich Albion and Palace.

His form with the latter of that quartet saw Gallagher handed a maiden call-up to the England senior squad and he earned the first of four caps during a 10-0 win in San Marino last November.

He returned to Chelsea this summer and made a long-awaited senior debut when he came on as a late substitute in Saturday’s 1-0 win at Everton.

Gallagher has recently earned the praise of Blues manager Thomas Tuchel, who described the midfielder as ‘a big asset’ during his side’s recent tour of the United States.

Speaking to the club website, he said: “Conor trains at a really high level, and you can clearly see it was the right decision to let him go on loan.

“He made a huge step in his development at Crystal Palace and became an England player.

“We can see this clearly in training. It was a very good start and a good match for him.”

“Now, for him, it's important he gets used to our principles of the game, to understand when to move and when not to move, and his work rate is outstanding, and he has such a big heart. He can be a big asset for us.”

Gallagher also won the praise of former Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Jamie O’Hara and was hailed as ‘different class’ during his time on loan at Palace.

It remains to be seen whether Gallagher will be handed a chance to shine in a competitive midfield at Chelsea or if he will be allowed to depart on loan once again this season.

90Min have reported Newcastle have made an enquiry for the midfielder almost 12 months after he was initially targeted by former Magpies manager Bruce.

Premier League rivals West Ham United and Crystal Palace are also said to be keen on securing the services of the England star.
