Newcastle United remain interested in Southampton full-back Tino Livramento despite the two clubs being some distance apart in their valuation of the England Under-21 star.

The Magpies reportedly submitted a £15million bid for Livramento earlier this week and have also discussed the possibility of including winger Ryan Fraser in the deal after the Scotland international spent the majority of the second half of last season training with United’s Under-21s.

However, despite their need to sell players to help them deal with the financial impact of relegation from the Premier League, Southampton are believed to want a figure closer to £25million before they will consider allowing Livramento to depart during the summer transfer window.

The main reason behind their insistence on a higher fee is a reported sell-on clause that was included in the deal that saw them sign the full-back from Chelsea just over two years ago. After impressing in the Blues academy setup, there was some surprise when Livramento joined Southampton in a £5m fee and that outlay looked to be a bargain after he impressed during his first season at St Mary’s.

Speaking ahead of the sale, then-Chelsea manager Thomas Tuchel revealed he had ‘no hard feelings’ about Livramento’s departure but was keen on retaining the services of the full-back.

He said: “Yes of course he was highly rated. We did everything to keep him here, to show him his future and his possibilities to compete for a position in our team. He decided to go, that was his decision and you sometimes have to accept. There are not hard feelings because we can show him possibilities and then it is on the player. He was of course competing with Reece James and Cesar Azpilicueta on the right wing-back position.

“I think it was an ideal position to fight because the group wasn’t too big. There was a big chance for him to make it all the way. He decided to go and it’s fair enough, we wish him all the best. We saw the potential, he decided to go another way and fight for a place at Southampton.”

Chelsea are now set to benefit from any sale of their former academy star after they reportedly included a ‘significant’ sell-on clause in the deal that took the youngster to the South Coast. The Athletic have suggested the Blues will receive around £8million if United are successful with an increased offer of £23million, with Southampton claiming the remaining £15million to go towards their own summer trading as they look to bounce back into the Premier League at the first attempt.
