Newcastle United are in advanced talks to sign Southampton full-back Tino Livramento.

Magpies head coach Eddie Howe is keen to sign a left-back this summer and Livramento, a Chelsea academy graduate, can play both full-back positions.

United have Kieran Trippier at right-back with Harrison Ashby and Emil Krafth as back-up, though the latter spent the majority of the 2022-23 season on the sidelines with an ACL injury.

At left-back, however, Newcastle are a little lighter.

Dan Burn, a recognised central back, played most of last season there, while injuries to Matt Targett during the first part of the season restricted the former Aston Villa man to just six Premier League starts.

Although Burn performed admirably by helping Newcastle record the joint-best defensive record in the league on their way to securing Champions League qualification, Howe believes the team will from an out-and-out full-back.

Livramento is predominantly a right-back but Howe is drawn to his versatility. As per the Daily Telegraph, discussions with the Saints are taking place but both clubs remain apart at this stage on valuation.

The St Mary’s club value the 20-year-old at £30million, whereas Newcastle want to agree a fee around half the figure. Howe is open to including Ryan Fraser in a potential cash plus player swap deal.

Fraser, 29, last played for the club in October after falling out with Howe. He spent the second half of last season training with the under-21s.

Livramento moved to the South Coast from Chelsea in 2021 for just £5m but missed over a year of football after sustaining an ACL injury in April 2022.

The England under-21s returned in May and played in remaining fixture against Brighton and Hove Albion and Liverpool.

Livramento could become Newcastle’s second summer signing behind Sandro Tonali, who is expected to seal his £60m move from AC Milan before the end of the week.
