Newcastle United ‘open talks’ with ex-Man United star as Eddie Howe transfer lists duo

All the latest transfer news and rumours surrounding Newcastle United as Eddie Howe eyes reinforcements.

Newcastle United continued their charge for a Champions League spot with a late win over Fulham on the weekend. Alexander Isak struck late to see off a tricky Fulham side, returning from injury with a bang.

The Magpies remain in third place as a result, and they now have a five-point cushion over Tottenham in fifth place. Eddie Howe will now be working on potential signings with just two weeks or so remaining in the January transfer window. With that in mind, we have rounded up all the latest transfer news and rumours surrounding St James’ Park.

Memphis chase

Newcastle are said to be taking steps to sign Barcelona star Memphis Depay this month. According to Football Insider, the Magpies have now opened talks with Barca for the signing of the Dutchman.

Memphis joined Barca on a free transfer before last season, and the Catalonian giants are said to be willing to offload him as they look to reduce their salary bill. Chelsea star Christian Pulisic was said to be a target, but after his injury blow lately, Memphis is now said to be the priority. PSV are also said to be interested, though, having lost Cody Gakpo to Liverpool recently.

Transfer listed duo

Newcastle may be looking for incomings, but they also need to make space in their squad, and indeed their wage bill. As part of that, Howe has now told two players they can leave, according to The Athletic, with Ryan Fraser and Karl Darlow now transfer listed.

Both players are said to have been told they can leave St James’ Park, free to look for interested clubs elsewhere. Neither have been part of Howe’s plans, and they are likely to want regular football. Darlow will be allowed to leave after Martin Dubravka’s return from his loan move to Manchester United, while Howe is said to see Fraser as a ‘sellable asset’ as he looks to improve his squad.
