Newcastle United are in talks with Bournemouth defender Lloyd Kelly about a potential free transfer, according to reports.

The 25-year-old is out of contract at the end of the season and his arrival would free up funds elsewhere for the Magpies. Wriggle room on the balance sheet was tight in January, with Newcastle unable to bolster their ranks despite a depleted squad.

CEO Darren Eales spoke recently about needing to comply with FFP/PSR regulations - making Kelly a prudent option. Signed by Eddie Howe five years ago, the centre-back was an important player as Bournemouth won promotion to the Premier League in 2022.

Kelly has been injured in recent weeks, last featuring in the 2-2 draw with Newcastle over a fortnight ago. Bournemouth boss Andoni Iraola played him at left-back, highlighting the versatility that also appeals to United.

The Daily Mail report that Newcastle have held talks with Kelly’s representatives over a summer move. AC Milan and clubs in Germany are also named as possible destinations for the former England under-21 international.

One consequence of Kelly’s arrival could be club captain Jamaal Lascelles. His contract also expires in the summer and there has been reported interest from Turkish giants Besiktas.

Howe spoke at the back end of last year about hoping to keep the 30-year-old on Tyneside. As it stands, Lascelles is the only first-team backup at centre-back as Dan Burn continues to be selected on the left.

Sven Botman and Fabian Schar are the undisputed first-choice options at Newcastle, with on-field skipper Kieran Trippier at right-back. Lascelles is approaching a decade at St James’ Park and remains the club’s off-field captain despite having limited game time in recent seasons.
