Well wishes from people across the UK have come thick and fast in the hours following the statement and now Newcastle United co-owner Mehrdad Ghodoussi has added his words.

In a message posted on Twitter shortly after 3 pm on Thursday, Mr Ghodoussi wrote: "My thoughts and prayers are with Her Majesty the Queen."

Newcastle fans replied to the co-owner, labelling his message as "a class touch as always". Others wrote "amen to that" and "hear hear".

A message from fellow co-owner Jamie Reuben followed shortly after. He wrote: “Thoughts and prayers with the @RoyalFamily at this very concerning time.”

Such a serious message from Buckingham Palace regarding the Queen's health is very unusual with the 96-year-old's medical matters regarded as private.

Prince Charles has travelled to Balmoral alongside his wife, the Duchess of Cornwall. The Duke of York, the Count and Countess of Wessex, The Duke of Cambridge and The Duke and Duchess of Sussex are all also on their way to the Scottish estate.

Princess Anne was already in Scotland and is at Balmoral.
