The win comes after Erik ten Hag claimed the Magpies used time-wasting tactics in their rise to the upper echelons of the top flight table. Eddie Howe bit back with some choice words of his own in the post-match press conference.

And Newcastle co-owner Mehrdad Ghodoussi has backed up his manager with some select words of his own on Twitter.

Ghodoussi said: “Only one UNITED in this house @NUFC #united #NewcastleUnited.”

Fellow co-owner Jamie Reuben has also reacted to the win via Twitter.

He said: “Absolutely sensational - exactly right.”

The Magpies, who made it three wins out of three in the Premier League, next face West Ham United on Wednesday.

Post-match, Howe admits he feels like Ten Hag’s timewasting comments were unfair.

Speaking after the 2-0 win, the Newcastle head coach said: ““I’m pleased you brought that up actually because I want to make one thing very clear, we want the ball in play. We want a quick game.

“I don’t get where this time-wasting nonsense has come from because it’s not us and you saw today, we wanted the ball back in play as quickly as possible. High energy, high tempo.

“I’ll always stand up for my team. I’ll always stand up for what I believe is right, and that’s what I’ll always do.

“I think if something’s not accurate then naturally you want to put the right point across. As I said, we want the ball in play, that’s the type of team we are.”
