Jacob Murphy further underlined his reputation as Newcastle United’s dressing room joker by taking aim at Manchester United boss Erik ten Hag as he left the St James’ Park field.

The Newcastle-supporting winger has been become notorious for his on field antics this campaign, most famously waving off Duje Caleta-Car when the Southampton defender was dismissed in the Magpies’ win over Southampton in the Carabao Cup semi-final first leg.

And he added to his growing collection of ‘sh*thousery’ in the aftermath of the Joe Willock and Callum Wilson-inspired victory over the Red Devils.

As Murphy walked off the field he has been filmed turning to the camera and pointing to an imaginary watch on his wrist, in a clear dig at Dutchman Ten Hag.

Murphy’s act was in reference to repeated comments by Ten Hag in relation to ‘time-wasting’ tactics by Eddie Howe’s Newcastle.

Ten Hag first brought up Newcastle’s approach in the run up to the Carabao Cup final, but further underlined them on Friday, prior to his side’s visit to Tyneside.

“We know they delay, yeah,” he said.

“It’s something that is what the referees don’t want – they want to have tempo in the game.

“That is the aim of the Premier League, to have tempo in the game. So they [referees] also have to be consistent to let the game go. Do and act what the policy is.”

Howe hit back in his post-match press conference, saying: “I’m pleased you brought that up actually because I want to make one thing very clear, we want the ball in play. We want a quick game.

“I don’t get where this time-wasting nonsense has come from because it’s not us and you saw today, we wanted the ball back in play as quickly as possible. High energy, high tempo.

“I’ll always stand up for my team. I’ll always stand up for what I believe is right, and that’s what I’ll always do.

“I think if something’s not accurate then naturally you want to put the right point across. As I said, we want the ball in play, that’s the type of team we are.”
