Bruno Guimaraes has expressed his sadness at Newcastle United’s late defeat to 10-man Everton.

The Magpies left Goodison Park empty-handed after Alex Iwobi walked through the defence to fire home a stoppage-time winner.

It came just over 15 minutes after Allan was sent off for the home side for a cynical yet dangerous foul on substitute Allan Saint-Maximin.

Eddie Howe’s side, suffering their second successive loss, missed the opportunity to extend their advantage over the Premier League relegation zone to 12 points.

Guimaraes, who started his third consecutive game in a United shirt, tweeted his short verdict: “Very sad for today’s result, but now we have to focus on training and play better.

“We need your support as always in our walk! Together.”

In a game devoid of quality, the Brazilian, a £35million January signing from Lyon, was arguable United’s best performer on Merseyside.

Everton, with the home crowd behind them, came firing out the traps but Guimaraes’ class and calmness in possession was key to Newcastle gaining a foothold in the first-half.

It was another glimpse into the calibre of player Newcastle have recruited after the 24-year-old was on the radar of some of Europe’s biggest clubs.

Guimaraes will now travel to Dubai with his teammates with Howe’s men waiting a long way before they are back in action against Tottenham Hotspur on April 3.
