Newcastle United are still considered to be the frontrunners in the race to sign Fulham defender Tosin Adarabioyo, despite fresh reports of interest from top six rivals Manchester United.

That’s according to reports from transfer guru Fabrizio Romano, via GiveMeSport, who claims that the Magpies are positive about their chances of securing a deal early in the window.

He told the outlet: “My understanding remains that Newcastle remain frontrunners, they are in advanced talks to sign Adarabioyo this summer, and they’re also chasing another defender in Bournemouth’s Lloyd Kelly.

“Newcastle want both players and are progressing well with these deals - they are optimistic about making it happen early in the summer.”

The Magpies are keen to bolster their defensive options after the long-term injuries to Sven Botman and Jamaal Lascelles, and have identified soon-to-be free agent Adarabioyo as the perfect option to provide extra squad depth.

Adarabioyo is Premier League proven, good on the ball and still has plenty of room to improve at 26 years of age. He was notably in the Championship Team of the Season when Fulham won promotion and has been a key figure in helping them consolidate their position in the top-flight.

However, Manchester United also have their eyes on the defender after Raphael Varane announced that he would be leaving Old Trafford at the end of the season.

In recent weeks, the Red Devils have suffered defeats to the likes of Arsenal and Crystal Palace, as well as a draw at Burnley which has seen them fall down to eighth in the table. Alarmingly Erik ten Hag’s have also faced more shots than the majority of the teams in the division with Andre Onana making 142 saves, for context only Thomas Kaminski of Luton Town has made more with 143.
