Newcastle United are once again scouring the free agent market for talent

Newcastle United are hoping to use the free agent market to their advantage as Eddie Howe and his team aim to get ahead of the curve with their summer transfer business.

Earlier this month, the Magpies emerged as favourites to land two experienced Premier League defenders in Fulham’s Tosin Adarabioyo and Bournemouth’s Lloyd Kelly who are both out-of-contract this summer, with Fabrizio Romano claiming that the duo are both are in ‘advanced talks’ with the North East club.

However, the Daily Mail reports the Magpies are still scouring the free agent market for further bargains and adds that they could now turn their attention to Southampton star Alex McCarthy.

The 34-year old goalkeeper, who was outstanding for Southampton in their Championship play off semi-final first leg draw with West Bromwich Albion on Sunday, is out of contract at the end of this campaign and that has alerted a number of clubs after a string of consistent performances.

The vastly experienced goalkeeper with 147 Premier League appearances and one cap for England, has recently regained his place in the Saints first team after Gavin Bazunu’s ruptured achilles and was responsible for keeping his side in the tie at the Hawthorns after what proved to be a cagey affair.

Newcastle are on the lookout for a back-up goalkeeper with experience to replace the departing Loris Karius, while some sources have suggested that Martin Dubravka could look to leave if he isn’t guaranteed first choice football next term.

However, the Daily Mail adds that Newcastle aren’t the only club in the hunt for McCarthy’s signature. Celtic are also looking for a new goalkeeper following Joe Hart’s decision to retire, while Liverpool may need to bring in a deputy for Allison Becker if Caoimhin Kelleher leaves Anfield to chase first team football.

McCarthy has experience in the Premier League from spells at Reading, QPR and Crystal Palace and was lauded as Southampton Player’s Player of the Season as the Saints notably beat the drop on the final day of the 2017/18 campaign.
