Newcastle United will keep a close eye on Allan Saint-Maximin and Fabian Schar’s fitness during the two-week international break.
Saint-Maximin was withdrawn at half-time in Friday night’s 2-1 win at Nottingham Forest, where Alexander Isak scored a stoppage time winner, while Schar has been nursing a foot problem.

“Allan wasn’t quite right today, physically, I didn’t think,” head coach Eddie Howe said. “He’s been carrying a tight hamstring. I don’t think it’s a pull, it’s just a little bit of tightness.

“For me, it was obvious during that first half that he probably wouldn’t be able to carry on.”

Schar, left out of the Switzerland squad because of “recurring foot pain” - according to boss Murat Yakin - managed to a full 90 minutes at the City Ground.
“Fabian’s been carrying lots of different things in the last few weeks,” revealed Howe. “He’s been carrying a foot problem and also had a concussion, so I think it’s just a chance for him to rest his body and go again.”

Howe takes his players to Dubai over the break before returning to action against Manchester United on Sunday, April 2 at St James’ Park.
Newcastle will be without top scorer Miguel Almiron, who Howe revealed will miss the next six weeks with a thigh injury sustained in training. Anthony Gordon could return but Howe said the January signing has “work to do”.
