Tottenham Hotspur have entered the race to sign Manchester City misfit Kalvin Phillips, according to reports. Newcastle United have been linked with the 28-year-old throughout the winter window, with midfield an area of concern for Eddie Howe. As it stands, the Magpies only have Bruno Guimaraes, Sean Longstaff and rookie Lewis Miley available.

A mixture of injuries and suspension leaves Joe Willock, Joelinton, Elliot Anderson and Sandro Tonali sidelined, with no sign of any player coming back after the two-week break. Adding Phillips to the ranks would be a welcome addition given his experience and defensive capabilities.

However, concerns regarding City’s hefty demands have frustrated Toon chiefs. Newcastle World understands the treble winners are demanding a £6million loan fee for the midfielder plus an obligation-to-buy clause in the summer.

Phillips is yet to start a Premier League game under Pep Guardiola this season and faces a battle to make Gareth Southgate’s squad for Euro 2024. While the Magpies were leading the pack, an update from The Northern Echo has claimed Spurs are now vying for his signature.

Tottenham have been one of the busier top-flight clubs in the January transfer window as they plan to kick on after an impressive season so far. Ange Postecoglou has already added Radu Dragusin and Timo Werner to his ranks.

Spurs have significant headroom with Financial Fair Play due to Harry Kane’s £100million sale last summer. The report suggests key players in North London are keen on making Phillips their third winter addition.
