United’s transfer hierachy saw their patience pay off when Botman finally moved to Tyneside in June - but their interest in De Vrij remains alive according to reports in Italy.
Gazzetta dello Sport have reported the defender is preparing for ‘a long goodbye’ with Inter after making over 170 appearances during a four-year stay at the San Siro.

Hide AdDe Vrij has enjoyed success during his time with Inter, helping the club to the Serie A title, Coppa Italia and Supercoppa Italia over the last three seasons.
But thoughts are quickly turning towards his future with 30-year-old heading into the final six months of his current contract during the new year and that would allow him to negoiate a pre-contract agreement with a club outside of Serie A.
Several clubs - including Newcastle - have been linked with a move for the centre-back - although former Inter and Holland star Aron Winter is confused by his situation at the San Siro.

Hide AdSpeaking earlier this year, he told Gazzetta: “I would think twice before selling him.
“Where can (Inter) find someone better? I’ve always felt a close bond with him.
“Perhaps because we shared the same journey in Italy, first at Lazio and then at Inter. He is a nice guy and I like how he defends and the way he holds the ball, in a very Dutch style.”
The same outlet have suggested Newcastle are a ‘possible destination’ for De Vrij, who is expected to postpone any decision over his next step until the end of the season.
